Black Leaders Worldwide honors Domonique Gilmer, 2025 Men To Watch.

Raised by penitentiary visits and fueled by resilience, Domonique DeJoan Gilmer is a leader whose life’s work is rooted in education, economic empowerment, and community development. Moving over 10  times before the age of 17 between Louisiana, Ohio, and Minnesota, he understands the power of stability, opportunity, and perseverance.

A former special education student turned principal, coach, and doctoral candidate, his journey defies the odds and redefines what is possible when education, resilience, and leadership converge. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Leadership at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota building on his commitment to transforming educational systems.

Domonique holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Urban Education from Hamline University (2012-2014), where he explored the motivations of African American male students in middle school. Additionally, he earned a PK-12 Administration License from the University of Minnesota (2015-2016) and completed the Minnesota Principals Academy at the National Institute for School Leadership (2019-2021). His academic foundation also includes a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education/Social Studies from Concordia University-St. Paul (2009-2011) and an Associate of Arts in Sociology/Criminology from Iowa Central Community College (2007-2009).

As the Founder of Acres & A Mule Investments, Domonique is committed to economic justice and land ownership as a tool for generational wealth. His company reinvests in people, providing grants for vocational training and fostering a family-like community of educators, students, and parents. Acres & A Mule Investments has established seven companies, with its flagship enterprises including King Movers, Queen Cleaners, Trap House Kitchen, Greenwood Property Management, and Equal Grounds Consulting. Currently serving as an Educator and Teacher of Color Coordinator, he is dedicated to developing culturally responsive pedagogy and creating pathways for students to become lifelong learners. His work is centered on a growth mindset, ensuring that every child—regardless of background—has access to high-quality education and the support necessary to navigate life’s challenges.

Beyond the classroom, Domonique has worn many hats—juvenile corrections officer, assistant principal, coach, mentor, and nonprofit board member—always working at the intersection of education, justice, and leadership. His belief is simple: when we invest in people, we transform communities.

A  Yogi and former NCAA Track & Field Academic All-American, he understands the importance of balance, discipline, and mindfulness. His upbringing, personal experiences, and professional background uniquely position him to advocate for educational reform, youth development, and equitable opportunities for marginalized communities. As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult), Domonique carries a deep understanding of accessibility and inclusion, shaping his approach to leadership and education.

Now, as he continues his doctoral journey, he is on a mission to expand his impact—challenging systems, empowering future generations, and ensuring that education remains a transformative force for all. Domonique does business across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, and Louisiana, ensuring his work reaches communities in need.

For Domonique, this work isn’t just a career—it’s a calling
