Black Leaders Worldwide honors Dr. Joel Brown, 2026 Men To Watch Awards

, MD, is a family physician based in Ontario, Canada. Born in Jamaica and trained in the United Kingdom, he brings a global perspective shaped by experience across different healthcare systems. He practices in a rural community, where he focuses on improving access, continuity, and quality of care within the realities of frontline medicine.


He serves as Vice President of the Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario (BPAO), contributing to leadership development, advocacy, and advancing equity within the profession. His work centres on strengthening representation and supporting systems that better serve diverse communities. Dr. Brown is an Adjunct Professor at Western University, where he supports the training of future physicians. He is involved in interviewing and training residents in family medicine and contributes to research projects focused on improving care delivery and outcomes.


He is actively involved in regional health system leadership through the Huron Perth Ontario Health Team, where he serves on the Clinical Leadership Council and Physicians Advisory Council. His work focuses on system design, care integration, and strategic approaches to improving access, coordination, and patient outcomes across the region. His interests include healthcare systems improvement and the practical use of technology, including artificial intelligence, to support clinicians, reduce inefficiencies, and expand access to care. He focuses on applying innovation in ways that remain grounded in real clinical environments.


Outside of medicine, Dr. Brown is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He sees creativity as a core human capacity and a catalyst for both personal and social transformation, and brings that perspective into his work, leadership, and public engagement. He is also a speaker and writer who engages with questions of health, leadership, and identity, with a perspective shaped by both frontline practice and broader system thinking.
