Women To Watch 2024 honoree Katryna L. Kinn



Katryna L. Kinn is a 30+ year educator having served in school leadership capacities, including principal, assistant principal and school counselor. She is a former secondary English and Speech/Drama teacher and TV, radio and newspaper reporter.


Presently, Kinn designs and conducts professional development trainings in her role as educational consultant and owner of Elevate Consulting and Communications, LLC. Additionally, she is a professional learning specialist with the Alabama State Department of Education where she provides instructional support and frameworks to increase student achievement. Kinn has recently been selected by the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS) to serve as a Principal Mentor. Kinn is also an Educational Specialist and “Project MENtor” Grant Manager with the 100 Black Men of Greater Mobile,

Incorporated, where she coordinates the mentoring of youth at middle and high schools in Mobile County. She works with students on literacy and life skills, socio-emotional wellness and financial literacy.


Kinn completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama earning a degree in journalism and secondary education. She furthered her studies at Alabama State University and Troy State University earning degrees in secondary education and school counseling, respectively.


Kinn has been recognized in the field of education for her significant impacts. She was recognized by the Alabama Reading Association as Outstanding School Administrator. Kinn is also the recipient of the NAACP Woman Leader Making a Difference Award. Kinn was also recognized as Outstanding Administrator at the GRONAFEST Awards and by the Metro Mobile(AL) Reading Council as Outstanding Administrator in Reading.


She has also led her school to receive International recognition as an Exemplary Reading School by the International Literacy Association and as a Talents Unlimited International Demonstration Site. Under her leadership, Kinn mobilized her staff to become digital literacy leaders, thus enabling her school to become a Discovery Education Digital Literacy School. Her school was also recognized as a Renaissance Accelerated Reader Model School, and was named as a 2020 Alabama CLAS Banner School of Excellence.


Kinn’s affiliations include memberships in the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS), Mobile United Education Task Force (Leadership Mobile Class of 2019), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (National Program Planning & Development Committee). As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, she has served as president of the Mobile Alumnae Chapter and past regional officer (Member, Southern Regional Nominating Committee). Kinn was recently named the 2024 Delta of the Year by the Mobile Alumnae Chapter for her leadership of the Alabama State Cluster.


Kinn also spends her time attending state and national educational conferences and serving as a conference keynote speaker. She is also a professional announcer at numerous community events.


Kinn is married to Sinatra Kinn and she is the mother of one daughter, Kyla, who is a graduate of Florida A&M University and a third-year Doctor of Pharmacy student at FAMU.
