Men To Watch Awards 2026 honors Keith Downey

Keith Downey is a native Houstonian, Kashmere High School Class of 1980 graduate, architect, community leader, advocate, and longtime champion for underserved communities. He attended Prairie View A&M University and the University of Texas at Arlington, where he studied Architecture. He later pursued studies in Servant Leadership at Cornell University and Environmental Justice at Texas Southern University.

Mr. Downey spent 27 years in New York City as an architectural designer, where he designed affordable housing for low-income families throughout Harlem, Spanish Harlem, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. He also served as a Senior Construction Project Manager for the City of New York. In 2011–2012, he was part of the New York City Parks and Recreation Capital Team that received the Capital Team of the Year Award for its work rebuilding more than 20 parks throughout Brooklyn and Queens, including Queens’ first handicap-accessible playground.

After returning to Houston, Mr. Downey dedicated himself to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for residents to thrive. He serves as President of the Kashmere Gardens Super Neighborhood Council #52 and previously served for two years as Vice Chair of the City of Houston Super Neighborhood Alliance, an advisory body to the Mayor of Houston. He is also the host of Community Chat on KCOH AM 1230 The Source, using his platform to elevate community voices and address issues affecting Houston residents.

His commitment to health equity is reflected in his service as an MD Anderson Cancer Center Community Scientist and as a member of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Community Advisory Committee. He has also served with the LBJ Hospital Alliance, the Harris Health Sheila Jackson Lee Center for Accelerating Health Outcomes Community Ambassador Coalition, the Texas Southern University Center for Biomedical and Minority Health Research Community Advisory Board, and the Texas General Land Office CDBG-MIT Citizens Advisory Committee.

Mr. Downey is a co-founder of the Every Community Every School wraparound services initiative in Houston ISD, which connects students and families with critical non-academic resources addressing mental and physical health, food insecurity, housing instability, and other challenges that can affect student success.

As Director of Partnerships with the Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council, Mr. Downey works to advance economic development, equitable education, citizen empowerment, environmental justice, food access, disaster recovery, and community resilience. The organization’s work includes the transformation of Chatham Elementary into a community resilience hub.

He is also one of the founders of the Northeast Community Farmers Market, an initiative created to address food insecurity in the Kashmere Gardens community. Now approaching its eighth year, the farmers market has become an enduring community resource. Mr. Downey also helped bring one of Houston’s first resilience hubs to a City of Houston-managed facility, helping establish a model that provides community support during extreme weather, including warming centers in the winter and cooling centers in the summer. In 2025, the resilience hub received a permanent backup generator, becoming the first City of Houston community center to receive such a permanent generator.

Mr. Downey’s service and leadership have earned recognition at the local, state, and national levels. He was named a 2017 Houston Hero by the Houston Chronicle, received the 2018 Ford Motor Company Harvey Hero Award and the 2018 Shell Hero of Houston Award, and was honored by the City of Houston with Keith Downey Day on July 23, 2020. He is a recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, 2023, and 2024, the Who's Who Worldwide Humanitarian Award for 2025, and the 2025 Outstanding Texan Award from the 89th Texas Legislative Black Caucus.

Through architecture, public service, community advocacy, and a lifelong commitment to equity, Keith Downey has devoted his career to building stronger communities, creating access to opportunity, and leading with impact.
